On National Grandparents Day and every day, we give thanks to grandparents for their wisdom, strength, and love. Grandparents are storytellers of family tradition and the centerpieces of family gatherings. They also help raise children – shuttling grandkids to-and-from school, babysitting when parents are away from home, and offering advice and comfort when it is needed most.

This year, National Grandparents Day falls on Sunday, September 10 and we’ve got the perfect list of fun activities and ways for grandparents and grandchildren to celebrate this special holiday together.

History of National Grandparents Day

The tale of how National Grandparents Day came to be is a heartwarming story that tugs at the heartstrings.

A West Virginia woman who radiated warmth and love as expansive as the rolling hills of her home state, Marian McQuade noticed that many elderly residents in her community were living in nursing homes, seemingly forgotten by their families and society at large. This observation sparked something within her and in 1970, she set on a journey to advocate and establish a dedicated day to honor grandparents and the invaluable wisdom and love that grandparents hold.

After tireless efforts and support from various quarters, President Jimmy Carter officially declared the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day in 1978. Since that historic proclamation, National Grandparents Day has been a day to shower our beloved grandparents with the appreciation they deserve. It's a day to reflect on the countless stories they've shared, the advice they've imparted, and the unconditional love they've given us.

7 Fun Ways to Celebrate National Grandparents Day With Grandkids of All Ages

1. Game On: From Classics to Contemporary

Cozy up in the living room for a family game night, a tradition that goes beyond generations and promises endless fun. Whether it's a round of Scrabble that has everyone racking their brains for the best word or a competitive session of charades that leaves you all in stitches, you'll discover that the bond of play creates a common language of carefree laughter.

You can even embrace technology in your game night and venture into the world of video games. From racing across virtual tracks in Mario Kart to solving puzzles in Portal, you'll be amazed at how technology shows that fun truly knows no age limit. And who knows, you might just learn a trick or two from your grandkids' gaming expertise!

2. Unleash Your Inner Museum Explorers

If you're a fan of culture and history, why not take your grandkids to a local museum? From art to science to quirky oddities, museums offer a unique way to engage in meaningful conversations and learn together. Remember, it's not just about what's on the walls – it's about the stories behind each exhibit and the curious questions that pop up along the way. As the great Dr. Seuss once said, "Think and wonder, wonder and think."

3. Crafting and Creating Memories

Unleash your inner artist and get those creative juices flowing with some good old-fashioned crafting. Whether you're crafting intricate scrapbooks, splashing vibrant colors onto canvases, or experimenting with DIY home decor, crafting together is a wonderful way to connect and have some fun.

So grab the paint, pick up the scissors, and let your imagination run wild alongside your grandkids'.

4. Road Tripping Down Memory Lane

The open road, where adventure beckons, stories unfold, and the thrill of the journey is just as exhilarating as the destination. Gather your grandkids and pack the trunk with a delightful assortment of snacks like cookies, chips, fruits, and maybe even a thermos of lemonade.

As you hit the road, the opportunities and destinations are endless. How about exploring nearby towns, unearthing their hidden gems and quirky landmarks? Or perhaps you decide to revisit your own favorite childhood spots, like the diner where you shared laughs with your best buddies or your favorite park in the neighborhood.

You can also drive around sharing stories of the past while creating new memories by playing a game of “I Spy” with a twist, pointing out not just objects but the stories behind them.

5. Cooking Up Family Traditions

Remember those secret family recipes that have been passed down through generations? Devote a day to culinary adventures in the kitchen, where you'll not only share the intricacies of each dish but also the stories that make them truly special.

As Julia Child once said, "People who love to eat are always the best people," and the act of preparing a meal together becomes an embodiment of that sentiment. The day spent in the kitchen also won't just be about learning recipes; it will be a bridge between generations, a connection to your roots, and a reminder that the simplest things, like the joy of cooking, can create the most profound memories.

6. Embrace Outdoor Adventures

If you're lucky enough to live in a community that emphasizes nature and exploration, take full advantage!

Put together a mini-Olympics for your grandkids and engage in playful competitions from sack races and three-legged races to good old-fashioned tug-of-war.

Or, spread out picnic blankets and share delicious food while basking in the company of friends and family because there's something so magical about savoring a meal in the open air, surrounded by laughter and the soothing sounds of nature.

7. The Great Book Exchange

Books are the gateway to boundless worlds and infinite adventures, so immerse your grandkids in a literary journey where classic literature meets contemporary fiction, fantasy dances with reality, and historical narratives intertwine with futuristic imaginings.

Share your favorite reads with your grandkids and encourage them to do the same. You'll not only exchange literary gems but also open doors to new worlds, new ideas, and conversations that will linger in your hearts.

Weaving Memories Across Generations

As you engage in these timeless activities with your grandkids, you're not just participating in games, crafting, and storytelling. You're writing a narrative of love, understanding, and shared experiences that transcends time.
